Certificate of Anglican Studies
The Bloy House one-year Anglican Studies curriculum is for those aspiring to ordained ministry who have an MDiv from a non-Episcopal Seminary and need further formation in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican tradition.
The program will begin in August 2024: the first semester will run from August through December, and the second semester will run from January to Mid-June (working around Easter). Each semester is divided into two modules – each module is comprised of 8 weeks, with four alternating teaching Saturdays; each Saturday has a morning and afternoon class. There are 12 total instructional hours for each class.
The outline for the program is below, with a brief description of what topics are covered in each class.
Total Tuition Cost: $3,000 (note: Diocesan/Bloy House scholarships are available to offset a portion of this cost)
1. $500 deposit due at registration
2. If you are a postulant in the diocese of Los Angeles, after your registration, the diocese will be billed for a 40% scholarship.
3. The remainder (after scholarship) can be paid in four payments of $325 each due on the first day of every module.
4. If you are not a postulant in the diocese of Los Angeles, your remaining tuition can be paid in four payments of $625 each due on the first day of every module.

Fall 2024
Module 1 – Aug. to Mid-Oct., four teaching weekends (dates TBD)
Alternating Saturdays, 9 am -4 pm.
Classes will be held at St. Paul’s Commons: 840 Echo Park Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90026.
Episcopal Presbyteral Ministry
Explores the distinct practice of priesthood in the Episcopal Church (TEC) in relation to the Canons (see Title III, Canon 9, sec 6), and pastoral norms. The course will discuss the ethical practice of the priesthood as understood by TEC and will cover the roles of Rector/Vicar/Interim/Priest in Charge and bi-vocational ministry.
Anglican Theology & Spirituality 1
Begins by studying representative Anglican theologians in a historical manner to arrive at a definition of the unique way of Anglican thinking. Discusses how early Anglican spirituality developed out of worship practices, an understanding of the sacraments, and the ordering of time.
Module 2 – Mid-Oct. to Dec., four teaching weekends (dates TBD)
Church History 2
Discusses historical developments in the Anglican/Episcopal Church from the English Reformation through to Modern Episcopalianism.
Anglican Theology & Spirituality 2
Continuation of previous class into modern theological ideas and their import for TEC. Explores modern spirituality in TEC and new ways of thinking about worship, the sacraments, and spiritual practices.
Winter/Sprint 2025
Module 3
Episcopal Polity
Canon law and polity of the Episcopal Church, its origins, and current practices.
Liturgics - Book of Common Prayer (General Episcopal)
Anglican sacramental theology; worship and liturgy as theology; brief history of worship in Anglican/Episcopal Church; overview of current worship and music practices in TEC.
Module 4
Global Anglicanism
Introduction to the Worldwide Anglican Communion, its history and composition. Modern issues facing the 21st century communion and the member churches will be discussed.
Presbyteral Liturgics / Practicum
The specific role and tasks of a priest in conducting modern Episcopal Worship: Eucharist, Baptism, weddings, and funerals. This course will include practice worship for the participants.
