Bloy House Students

Students at Bloy House fall into two broad categories:

1] Non-program students elect to take one or more courses per semester as their interest dictates and as the logical progression of courses allows. We welcome students who wish to join us for this limited study to “test the waters” of theological education as part of their discernment for ministry or to strengthen the ministries in which they are engaged.

2] Program students enroll for all the courses offered at their level in a given semester, and they follow the progression of the Bloy House curriculum. At the end of two years a student may receive a certificate of studies; after four years a diploma is awarded.

Some regular students will continue their studies leading to a Master of Divinity degree at another seminary after their completion of the equivalent of two full-time years at Bloy House. They usually transfer to a residential Episcopal seminary (primarily to the Church Divinity School of the Pacific [CDSP] in Berkeley, California) or to Claremont School of Theology.

The student has several options:
1] Transfer to a residential Episcopal seminary after two years at Bloy House, entering the new seminary as a middler and completing two full-time years there.

2] Transfer to a residential Episcopal seminary after 63 units at Bloy House. The Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) will accept the entire Bloy House curriculum for application towards its M.Div. degree; the student then completes all other CDSP requirements in a final residential year there. Other Episcopal residential seminaries will accept about two years’ worth of work at Bloy House for application towards their M.Div. degrees. The number of units which each seminary may transfer differs.

3] Enroll in the Joint Master of Divinity Program offered by Bloy House and Claremont School of Theology. Students who elect this option will complete the entire 63-unit curriculum at Bloy House, whose courses are approved by the Association of Theological Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for application towards the M.Div. degree at CST. Students in this joint program will also complete 27 units of work in specific courses and areas at CST.

This joint degree, which normally requires five years to complete, may be accelerated to as little as three and one-half years if the student is able occasionally to take other night, day, or summer classes at CST during his or her years at Bloy House.

Please note: Students who wish to transfer credits to another institution are advised to be in touch with that institution early on in their studies at Bloy House so that both programs may be coordinated smoothly. Students are encouraged to be in regular conversation with the Bloy House Dean about academic advisement.
